RESEARCH BREAKTHROUGH
ii. Principal investigator, development of control for taro leaf blight (Phythophtora colocasiae) in 2011 (use of fungicides, eg Ridomil, Nordox, etc.). This recommendation is in use in the Cocoyam Research Programme of the NRCRI, and it has been extended to farmers.
iii. Principal investigator, development of Gocing Barn in 2009 for sustainable storage of cocoyam corms and cormels. It is currently in use at NRCRI Umudike, as the cocoyam barn.
iv. Principal investigator, development of Gocken Rapid Multiplication Technology (GRMT) for very rapid multiplication of cocoyam and soil recapitalization, using 4 – 7 g micro setts and micro cormels and integrated use of organic manure at 4 t/ha at pre-cropping followed by NPK 15 15 15 at 400 kg/ha, 6 weeks after planting. The technology solves twin problems of low multiplication ratio and declining soil fertility. It is in use in the Institute and it has been disseminated to 11 States in Nigeria. v. I formed the Giant Crop (Cocoyam) Choir–the first crop-based cultural troupe in National Agricultural Research Institute System, which champions awareness campaign to enhance interest for cocoyam through aggressive advocacy, composure of songs, participation in cultural activities and scientific conferences; I am the progenitor of cocoyam slogan: Cocoyam Rebirth for Food Security and Empowerment; launched Cocoyam Consumption and Awareness Campaign (COCAWAC) in 2009; started School Cocoyam Project, Farmer Participatory Research (FPR); introduced Cocoyam Rebirth t-shirts, caps, flags, clocks and car stickers, to re-awaken interest for cocoyam.
