The Department of Plant Health Management formally known as Department of Crop Protection started in 1994. At the inception of this Department, students were admitted directly into the College of Crop and Soil Sciences. Now students are admitted directly into the department. The Department started with few students and staff and has rapidly grown to 200 and 15 respectively.

The Department has two Professors, three Associate Professors, three Senior Lecturers, two Assistant Lecturers Lecture, one Administrative Assistant, one Chief Secretarial Assistant, Executive Officer, one Field Assistant and a Head Messenger/Cleaner.

The Department of Plant Health Management offers outstanding academic programmes for undergraduate and graduate student preparation for careers in research, extension, business, or industry. The Department is one of the top Plant Health Management Departments in Nigeria based on its outstanding students, staff and Lecturers, and exceptionally diverse programs that impact positively on Abia State and its spheres of influence.

The Department enjoys a long-standing and productive collaboration with numerous agencies, universities and organizations worldwide. The Department is particularly proud of its collaboration and association with the Insect Science for Food and Health (ICIPPE) Nairobi Kenya, International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Ibadan and National Root Crop Research Institute (NRCR) Umudike and Utah State University (USU), Lagan in multiple research areas as well as its joint involvement in graduate student training. Department of Plant Health Management lecturers rank high in terms of peer-review publications.
